The College Internship Program (CIP) is a comprehensive post-secondary support program for young adults on the Autism Spectrum, with Asperger’s, ADHD and other Learning Differences. We offer full-year individualized academic, social, career and life skills support. Our Mission is to inspire independence and expand the foundation on which young adults can build happy and productive lives.

Our Long Beach Center location is currently accepting resumes for a part-time Student Support Specialist.  Available hours include days, evenings, and weekends.  The job of the Student Support Specialist is to mentor students to recognize and achieve their independent living goals at the postsecondary level. The Specialist works in various areas including academic, vocational, wellness, social, therapeutic, and residential services and information, so students can be guided through the various stages of their program. The Student Support Specialist tracks the progress of students and coordinates various supports to guide the student through the College Internship Program. This position will also cross train within each service department to provide support as needed and as time permits in their schedule within each functional department.

Some Duties & Responsibilities include:

  •  Assist students in transition and adjustment to college, career and independent living
  • Meet with students as scheduled to role model, teach and practice social skills in a variety of settings.
  • Involve students in everyday, real life experiences by accompanying them to local venues, college clubs, community activities and places that match their area of interest in order to practice their social skills.
  • Participate in quarterly and annual meetings with students, parents and caseworkers 
  • Summarize progress and communicate long-term plan 
  • Assist students with banking/money management, monitor student monthly budget, and support students with bill payment 
  • Facilitate weekly Team Review meetings and communicate up-to-date student goals and needs to College Internship Program staff 
  • Assist with Individual Program Plans and Semi-Annual Progress reports 
  • Respond to problems, policy violations, and other issues that might arise 
  • Consult and work regularly with Department Coordinators to ensure that each student’s programming is comprehensive and supportive of the student’s overall goals 
  • Attend weekly meetings to receive an update on student academic, residential, culinary, community service, therapeutic, wellness, social skills, and vocational progress 
  • Administrative duties associated with the position include, but are not limited to, regular reporting of advising sessions, communication with fellow staff, regular monitoring of student progress, writing or updating student reports, recording student attendance, completing weekly student assessment form, reporting student progress to parents and caseworkers as needed, and supporting students with schedule planning and goal setting
  • Other duties as assigned

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution in a related field 
  • At least two years related experience and/or training 
  • Strong special education and advising background, particularly at the higher education level preferred
  • Experience in the field of autism and/or learning differences preferred 
  • Excellent collaboration, communication, problem-solving, planning, prioritizing, mentoring, and organizational skills 
  • Ability to perform in a fast-paced environment and an ability to multi-task 
  • Presents a professional appearance and manner 
  • Ability to stay organized, focused and manage time 
  • Proficient with computer software for office tasks and in learning new company computer software programs
  • Some minimal travel may be required
